Summary: PAAR is a medical device that makes it possible to prevent and treat Musculoskeletal Injuries caused by specific jobs. Using a set of sensors, coupled to systems which are specific to different professions, this technology can analyse the user’s posture. This consists of:

1. analysing the posture instantaneously, classifying it as correct or incorrect;

2. personalised prevention/rehabilitation exercise programme (before and after work) to prevent the consequences of bad postures. This programme is devised according to the most affected limbs and the level of postural risk;

3. sending users to physical and medical rehabilitation services if the postural risk is high.

All this information can be accessed using the PAAR Mobile App or Website.

2ND PLACE: SWEATUP

SweatUP

Short sentence describing the project: System to measure muscle activity through sweat.

Summary: The goal with this idea is to find a non-invasive method to measure muscle activity. Exercising is becoming more and more common, and sometimes it leads to injuries, caused by a poor warm up. Overheating, however, is also a risk factor, usually caused by strained muscles. This system provides feedback, warning athletes on their warm up level. A strip with a colour scale will be put on the athletes’ bodies to analyse their levels of sweat. Then, as they exercise they can see the colour changing according to their warm up level. With this information, the athletes should know whether they need to warm up some more or start exercising.

3RD PLACE: SCEELIX

Summary: Sceelix makes it possible to create 3D scenes and digital elements in a manageable and smart way. To build them, Sceelix uses a visual language delivering better readability and manageability than conventional verbose scripts and languages. Its parameterised nature makes it easy to tweak and change whatever aspects we want, and scale scenes without any effort. The core technology behind Sceelix is Procedural Content Generation, which allows us to define complex generation patterns or even use existing geographical data in order to create scenes and elements. Sceelix was built as a modular framework which makes it fully extensible. This makes it possible to:

• Create new functionalities and share them with others

• Generate textures, sprites, effects, sounds, animations and interactions the same way as your scenes and elements, and integrate them with one another.

• Seamlessly integrate Sceelix with other tools or your existing work pipeline.

4TH PLACE: SURF TRAINING (ALL IN ONE)

Short sentence describing the project: Surf Training is a smartphone app that evaluates, monitors, compares, and supports the general and specific physical training  of surfers.

Summary: As a result of a PhD on the biomechanics of surf, it was possible to identify the specific and general assessment needs of surfers in and out of the water.In this context, a number of testing protocols was developed contemplating the following domains:

  • - Anthropometry
  • - Body composition
  • - Energy costs
  • - Balance
  • - Thrust
  • - Posture
  • - Speed
  • - Paddling strength
  • - Specific technical gestures
  • This multidisciplinary information, associated with the lack of means to assess the surfer in and out of the water, led to the development of an application/device that makes it possible to evaluate the general and specific abilities of the users, improving their performance.

Complementarily, a worldwide online service has been created that makes it possible to compare the results of different users, generating a competitive and healthy environment for users in different regions of the globe. As a result, the application/device is a differentiating product in the world market.

5TH PLACE: SMASH (EX AEQUO)

Short sentence describing the project: Smart Waste Disposal Solution

Summary: We address the problem of the increasing production of waste in locations where  population density is higher. For that, we use a self-sufficient underground container with a compression system powered exclusively by solar energy, which will allow refuse collection companies to reduce the number of collection trips, costs with staff, pollution, and all inherent costs. The waste bin is suitable for plastics, paper, or organic waste, and contains a horizontal hydraulic compression system, with a compacting ratio of 4:1. The automation system controls sensors that warn the refuse collection companies when it is necessary to unload the bin, creating an Intelligent Refuse Collection Route. This system creates the fastest and shortest route possible, according to the area where the containers are and the traffic in the city.

6TH PLACE: PLY

Short sentence describing the project: Sports Towel

Summary: Ply is a towel that can be used by any athlete – but was especially designed for runners –, allowing them to wipe their sweat at the end of the race/exercise without having to carry the towel in their hands. Furthermore, the towel can have a pocket to carry an iPod, a mobile phone, money, or even house keys, which is also important for runners. The towel can be strapped around the neck or waist as it contains two pieces of Velcro.
